Gordon Moir

Gordon Moir was born in Fraserburgh to a farming family. In 1976, he accepted an apprenticeship at Fraserburgh Golf Club and attended Elmwood College in Cupar where he gained a City and Guilds in Turf Management.
Gordon received the St Andrews Links Award for best overall student in year three Greenkeeping and was promoted to Head Greenkeeper at Fraserburgh Golf Club, a position he held for 11 years.
Gordon began his 27-year career at St Andrews Links Trust in 1991 and was soon promoted to Director of Greenkeeping. He headed a team of approximately 60 people, including 30 to 40 additional summer staff each year.
Alongside overseeing the construction of the Castle Course in 2005, Gordon led Greenkeeping at three Open Championships, two Women’s British Opens, a Seniors’ British Open and a Curtis Cup, along with numerous European Tour events and other championships.
Gordon regularly submitted successful applications on behalf of St Andrews Links for environmental awards. In 2011, Gordon headed the Links team when the course became the first Open Championship venue to gain certification from the Golf Environment Organisation. Gordon was also instrumental in St Andrews Links’ role in the dune restoration on West Sands.
Throughout his career, Gordon has supported the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association, holding the roles of Secretary, Scottish Chair, and President.
In June 2022, Gordon published The Greenkeeper’s Tale, which chronicles his 27 years with St Andrews Links.
He has been married to Pauline for 40 years and has three children and six grandchildren. He is currently President-Elect of the Rotary Club of St Andrews.
