Biography

Giulio Pertile grew up in Edinburgh and Cambridge, MA, and studied at Harvard (AB 2007), Cambridge (MPhil 2008), and Princeton (PhD 2014). He taught at Claremont McKenna College in California before joining the School of English in 2017.

Dr Pertile’s research focuses on early modern English literature in a comparative context. His interests include translation and transnational influence, poetics and literary form, and intellectual history in relation to literature. He is the author of Feeling Faint: Affect and Consciousness in the Renaissance (Northwestern UP, 2019) and Hexameral Poetics: Process and Vitality in Early Modern Literature (Fordham UP, 2026). With Matthew Augustine and Steven Zwicker he is the editor of Imagining Andrew Marvell at 400 (British Academy, 2022). He is currently completing European Poetry in English Translation: 1616-1689, an anthology of seventeenth-century Italian, French, and Spanish poetry in contemporary (i.e. seventeenth-century) English translation due to appear from the MHRA in 2028.

Dr Pertile welcomes proposals from prospective PhD students interested in any aspect of early modern literature, and especially from those working on questions of translation, poetics and poetic form, or literature and intellectual history.
