The Beautiful Game is looking for project members who are passionate about football and who love to think deeply about football data. You will enjoy collecting numbers and using spreadsheets and other software for statistical analysis. You will be highly committed to the VIP and make weekly research a priority. You will be a team player who values working together with others. You will be a responsive, cooperative and active contributor. The VIP will involve liaising with other members of the class outside of the weekly team meeting to make progress on the research.
The focus of the research will reflect the interests of the research team. A range of research questions are within scope including business models of clubs, their financial performance and sustainability, competitive balance in different leagues, match attendance, football performance and inequality across clubs, the women’s game, transfers, and the regulation of football. The research methods adopted are primarily quantitative, drawing up a range of data sources including, for example, football club accounts, fbref.com, transfermarkt.com and other databases.
Previous research on the project has investigated the organisation of Scottish professional football and the impact of Brexit on player recruitment in England and Scotland.
