Advanced standing credit

Although some degree programmes in the Faculties of Divinity and Science allow direct entry to second year for suitably qualified applicants, the same Senate regulations still apply. In particular, you need to gain 480 credits or 600 credits for an Honours or Integrated Masters degree, respectively.

On most direct entry programmes, in order that you can complete your degree in one less year, you will be awarded 120 advanced standing credits (ASCs) in recognition of your previous experience. ASCs can be retained if you are permitted to switch to a different direct entry programme. They will be withdrawn if you switch to any other programme, including a General degree.

If you applied for direct entry in your original application to St Andrews, your ASCs will be awarded automatically. If you applied for first-year entry but switched to direct entry on arrival, you will need to ask your Adviser of studies to arrange the award. It's important that this is resolved early in the first semester, to avoid a situation where you are short of credits to graduate.
