Max Quillan, fed up of teaching history, is seconded to the V&A Design museum in Dundee. It is set to stage an innovative exhibition using AI to produce holograms of famous people. It's inventor dies in an apparent accident and the software is now owned by the Kydd brothers, former rock stars with an unsavoury reputation locally. Max is suspicious how they acquired it.

With vivacious dentist Lucy Donaldson whose brother is a senior policeman, he learns the Kydds have killed once and will not hesitate to do so again to protect their interests.
