In 1894, German-born medical doctor Karl Grossmann, then living in Liverpool, visited the Faroe Islands with two companions. Grossmann, with a keen interest in geology, landscape and ethnography, was also a dedicated photographer and took a large number of photographs. After slide lectures in Copenhagen and London – the former not without subsequent controversy – Grossmann handed over approximately 180 photographs to the Royal Geographical Society in London, where they had lain unnoticed.
The book presents many of the images along with an explanatory text in Danish and English.
The collection represents the oldest substantial corpus of photographs from the archipelago, including the earliest known from the remote islands of Mykines, Svínoy and Fugloy.
The large format book is published by History Press Faroe Islands. It is 302 pages in length and contains 131 full page images. More details are to be found at https://historypressfaroeislands.com/)
