Biography
Jeffrey Hughes (BBS, MBS, PhD, FRSA, SFHEA) is Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at Durham University Business School and Honorary Professor at the University of St Andrews Business School. He also holds the position of Associate Chair for Durham University Business School's Smart & Scale initiative, a £9 million research programme that prioritises impactful outcomes in smart and scale-up activities.
He was awarded his PhD in Strategy and Information Systems by Trinity College Dublin, and completed his postdoctoral studies in the field of Big Data Analytics at the University of St. Andrews.
Jeffrey's research is featured in top-tier academic journals, including ABS4 and FT50 outlets, with publications in the Journal of Strategic Information Systems, Journal of Business Ethics, Management Learning, Business Strategy and the Environment, International Review of Administrative Sciences, Journal of Strategic Studies, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Journal of Business Research, International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behavior & Research, and Journal of Business Venturing Insights.
He is an award-winning educator known for linking theory to practice. He received the Teaching Excellence Award from Trinity Business School and multiple student-led nominations for the St. Andrews Students’ Association Teaching Awards in the categories of Best Teacher in the Faculty of Arts and Divinity and Innovative Teaching.
Jeffrey has secured over £1.5 million in competitive research funding from leading national and international sources, including the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the UK Government, and the Scottish Funding Council, serving as both Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator across a portfolio of high-impact projects. These include Who Engages and Why? (2024), Dartmouth College-Durham University Knowledge Exchange (2024), and Scale with a Purpose (2023).
He has held senior academic leadership roles including Deputy Director of the Graduate School for Interdisciplinary Studies and Director of Teaching at the School of Management, University of St. Andrews, and Head of MBA Programmes at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland.
Jeffrey brings extensive industry experience in the technology and consulting realms, having worked for multi-nationals such as Diageo, Eir, British Telecom, and Saros Consulting.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), and Adjunct Faculty in Strategy and Technology at Trinity College Dublin.
