Research

Research underpins all of the activities within the School of Art History. The research-based undergraduate student assistantships and postgraduate teaching offered at St Andrews encourages students to create new knowledge about the visual culture of the world around them. The conferences and seminars organised at St Andrews, and the public talks given elsewhere around the world, all draw upon the ground-breaking research done within the School.

Since the last Research Excellence Framework (REF), lecturers and professors in the School of Art History have won seven Leverhulme fellowship awards, two Getty fellowships, and a major European Research Council (ERC) grant. The School has particular strengths in:

  • Western and Islamic medieval objects
  • Early modern painting, architecture, and globalisation
  • History of photography
  • Modern and contemporary art
  • Decorative arts
  • Museum studies
