In 1959 the Franco-Venezuelan kinetic artist Carlos Cruz-Diez developed his first abstract series of works, named the Physichromies. These works have often been understood to show Cruz-Diez’s abandonment of his national identity and his wholesale adoption of European modernism. This article offers a different account of the Physichromies, arguing that Cruz-Diez’s engagement with the language of European modernism remained closely connected to both Venezuelan and ‘American’ forms of identity.
