Join us for 'Heat and Damp: Housing Struggles in the Franki Raffles Photography Collection'
The exhibition Resistance in Residence, hosted by the Travelling Gallery, will be visiting St Andrews on Monday 20th February 2023, where it will be viewable in the East Sands Leisure Centre carpark. Resistance in Residence is a group exhibition about community-led struggles for decent housing and radical attempts to imagine alternative ways of living. It features archive materials and artworks by Winnie Herbstein, Joey Simons, Keira McLean, and Lucas Priest (School of Pedestrian Culture) which document past and present campaigns for damp-free, warm and genuinely affordable homes. As well as capturing the incredible depth of knowledge held within communities across Scotland, the exhibition creates a space of exchange where practices of everyday resistance, tactics and success stories can be shared.
This archival display and informal talk with Dr Catherine Spencer will provide the chance to look at items in the Franki Raffles Photography Collection at St Andrews relating to the exhibition, particularly the documentary photography that Raffles undertook on housing in Scotland during the 1980s. Together, we will explore the relevance of Raffles’s photographs of housing to feminist housing activism from the 1980s to the present, particularly anti-dampness, insulation, and heating campaigns.
The event is free and all are welcome, but places are limited to 15 so booking is required. Please book via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/heat-damp-housing-struggles-in-the-franki-raffles-photography-collection-tickets-535487255797
