Walter Sickert at the Tate
Walter Sickert, Tate Britain’s current exhibition in collaboration with the Petit Palais, Paris, is the most extensive retrospective of Sickert’s work in almost thirty years.
The exhibition catalogue includes essays by two of the School of Art History’s lecturers. Dr Sam Rose and Dr Billy Rough, exploring the beginning and end of the artist’s long career.
Dr Rose’s essay ‘Final Years and Echoes’ explores the artist’s later years considering his response to modern art and artistic practice, particularly his interest in photography, whilst Dr Rough’s essay ‘The Much-Abused Apostle of Music Hall Art’ explores Sickert's earlier music hall inspired works, in particular his preference for female performers and the audience as subject matter.
Walter Sickert is open at Tate Britain from 28 April to 18 September 2022 before transferring to the Petit Palais 14 October 2022 to 29 January 2023.
