Applying to Scottish Graduate Entry Medicine programme (ScotGEM)

If you are applying to ScotGEM, please complete the following steps. 

1. Entry requirements

Ensure you meet the entry requirements.

2. Aptitude test

Ensure you have sat the relevant aptitude test.

3. Check the campus code details

When applying through UCAS, the ScotGEM code is A101.

4. Write a personal statement

Further information about personal statements is given within the 'qualities and experience' section on the entry requirements page. Guidance on how to write a personal statement can be found on UCAS.

5. Arrange a referee's report

Applicants who have studied at university at any point in the past three years (for example, an undergraduate degree, a Masters or a PhD), will only need to provide an academic reference as part of the UCAS application. This can be from an academic tutor or adviser of studies. Your academic referee should:

  • be up to date with your academic progress
  • have taught or supervised you in the last three years prior to entry to ScotGEM
  • comment on your academic performance, your attitude to study and your approach to working with others, including communication skills

Applicants who have not studied at university in the past three years will need to provide one of the following references as part of their UCAS application. Any references must be within the last three years:

  • an academic reference (for example, Higher or an A-Level). Your academic referee should:
    • be up to date with your academic progress
    • have taught or supervised you in the last three years prior to entry to ScotGEM
    • comment on your academic performance, your attitude to study and your approach to working with others, including communications skills
  • a workplace reference. Your workplace referee should:
    • comment on your suitability for medicine
    • have managed or supervised you in the last three years prior to entry to ScotGEM

All applicants should note:

  • References from family members or close friends are not acceptable.
  • Academic references must come from an official higher education institution email account.
  • Workplace references must come from an official work email account.

6. You will submit a UCAS application

All qualifications taken, regardless of grades obtained, must be included on the application form. Please indicate grades already obtained even if you are re-taking examinations. All qualifications you are taking in the future must be included and the predictions for those examinations should be included in your reference. Ensure that intermediate-level qualifications such as GCSEs and Standard Grades, or their equivalent, are included.

7. Submit your application by the deadline 

Candidates should apply by 15 October 2025 for 2026 entry to ScotGEM. The School does not consider late applications after the official closing date. The ScotGEM programme does not enter UCAS Extra or Clearing.

8. Submit your online questionnaire

The deadline for the questionnaire is likely to be in early November in the year before entry; applicants will be notified once the deadline has been finalised. Refer to your email communication for further details.
