Global Universities for Societal Impact (GUSI)

Global Universities for Societal Impact (GUSI) is a strategic alliance of international universities working together to amplify their collective impact through meaningful global collaboration.

Founded by the University of Bonn, Emory University, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the University of St Andrews, and Waseda University, GUSI connects institutions with a shared commitment to advancing excellence in research, education, and innovation, while driving positive change for society worldwide.

Mission

GUSI is dedicated to cultivating meaningful international collaboration that strengthens the global influence and strategic priorities of its member institutions. By fostering long-term partnerships, launching joint academic initiatives, and coordinating responses to shared global challenges, GUSI enables universities to generate knowledge and create opportunities that serve the broader public good.

The alliance is grounded in a commitment to academic excellence, societal impact, and responsible innovation. Its current thematic focus—Artificial Intelligence—shapes collaborative projects from 2024 to 2027, providing a dynamic framework for interdisciplinary engagement and exploration.

Governance & Member Engagement

The network is led by a rotating Network Board, consisting of senior representatives from each member institution. This Board sets strategic priorities, oversees collaborative initiatives, and ensures that network activities align with the goals of each institution. It convenes once a year, with hosting responsibilities rotating among the member universities.

Daily coordination of network activities is handled by the Operations Committee, which includes Directors of International and project leads. Specific initiatives under each thematic pillar are carried out by Project Working Groups, which are open to participation from all members.

All members have signed a shared Memorandum of Understanding and are expected to take an active role in both governance and project implementation.

Strategic Focus & Future Collaboration

GUSI’s initiatives are centered on three foundational pillars: research, education, and leadership and innovation. Through these focus areas, the alliance fosters joint efforts that expand global understanding, enhance academic networks, and equip institutions to effectively address critical global challenges. Moving forward, GUSI intends to expand its membership to include institutions from Africa and South America, broadening the network’s reach and enhancing its capacity for inclusive and impactful global engagement.
