Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships 2027
The School of Modern Languages at the University of St Andrews offers support for applications to the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship (ECF) scheme on a competitive basis.
The School was ranked first in Scotland and second in the UK for languages and linguistics by the Guardian University Guide 2026. It is distinguished by the breadth of its research, which spans language, literary and cultural studies across eight distinct language areas – Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Persian, Russian and Spanish – and a range of cultural-historical epochs from the middle ages to the present day. The School is also home to a thriving programme in Comparative Literature.
Academic and postgraduate research in the School of Modern Languages at St Andrews focuses on several broad areas:
- comparative studies
- creativity and performance
- environmental humanities
- gender and sexuality studies
- history, politics, and society
- medical humanities and cultures of science
- medieval and early modern studies
- memory studies
- postcolonial and transnational studies
- translation studies and linguistics
For further details about individual staff members and their research interests, see School people pages.
Candidates interested in applying to the Scheme through the School of Modern Languages should, in the first instance, check their eligibility. If eligible, they should then identify – and contact – an appropriate member of staff to act as a mentor. If the member of staff supports the proposal and agrees that the School can offer the resources required to support the research and submit the application by 12 noon on 30th October 2026. Please submit the UStA_Leverhulme ECRF application form.docx (Word) and accompanying documents to Professor Julia Prest, Director of Research, langsdor@st-andrews.ac.uk.
Proposed mentors should also submit, by the same deadline, a short statement of support (no more than 300 words) to the Director of Research outlining the strength of the application and confirming their willingness to act as mentor.
