Byre World Returns for New Semester

The School of Modern Languages and the Byre Theatre are pleased to announce the return of Byre World for the new semester - continuing the annual series of talks, workshops, and performances bringing the School of Modern Languages' global cultural studies research to the local community.

Running since 2015 in collaboration with the Byre Theatre in St Andrews, all Byre World events are open to all members of the University and the general public.

East German Cinema and the Holocaust - 27 January 2026
Screening of Sterne [Stars] by Konrad Wolf (1959) followed by Q&A with Seán Allan (St Andrews) and Elizabeth Ward (Leipzig).

The Olive and the Oak, 4 February 2026
A moving and joyful journey across the Middle East through stories, poetry, music, and dance.

Staying Alive: Conversations about Literature and Suicide, 8 April 2026
Join Dr Katie Jones for a discussion about the importance of literature and storytelling in suicide prevention.

Queer Tales: Women's Lives Reenacted, 21 April 2026
Dr Karol Valderrama-Burgos and Silvia Santamaría present a series of short performances that focus on women’s queer experiences.
