British Academy / Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowship Success
Claire Whitehead has been awarded a British Academy/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowship for her project ‘Russia’s First Female Crime Writers, 1860-1917’. Only 11 such Fellowships are awarded annually to established scholars working towards completion of a major project. Dr Whitehead’s research aims to uncover the untold story of the first women to write crime fiction in the Russian Empire and to show how their work provides an improved understanding of attitudes towards a range of issues in a patriarchal society (e.g. the legal system, economic disenfranchisement, male authority in the family and marriage). The 1-year Fellowship will be used to undertake archival research, complete a book on the subject and record podcast episodes in conversation with other experts.
