Dissertations Showcase - Visualising Innovation
The School of Modern Languages hosted its second annual Dissertations Showcase 7 May 2025 - celebrating the breadth and quality of the research work of its undergraduate students.
Organised by the School's Dissertations Convener, Dr Karol Valderrama-Burgos, the Dissertations Showcase - this year titled Visualising Innovation - provided an opportunity for undergraduate students to present their work to fellow students and members of the School's academic community. The Showcase is a means for students to gain experience in presenting their academic work to a mixed audience - as well as a chance for the School to learn more about the research being undertaken by its undergraduate students.
This year's showcase featured presentations from nine undergraduate dissertation students:
- Translation of selected songs by George Brassens into Scots
Ross Fitzpatrick (FR4198) - The Wounds on the Page: Life and Trauma in the Words of Antonia Pozzi and Alejandra Pizarnik
Cecilia Bechini (CO4098) - Cultural (Mis)Translations: An Analysis of Translated Queer Language in Netflix’s Original Spanish-Language Programmes
Holly Eakins (SP4098) - Raising the Curtain on the Politics of Textiles and Costuming in the Theatres of Saint-Domingue
Rebecca Sedgley (FR4199) - Articulating Italianità: Ghali, Mahmood, and the Sound of Inclusion
Talia Gold (ML4794) - This Way of Seeing: Visibility and Visuality in Ghassān Kanafānī’s ‘Ā’id ilā Haifa and Adania Shibli’s Tafṣīl Thānawī
Eve McDonald (AR4999) - Constructing Female Identity: An Analysis of Primary Education for Girls under Francoism 1940-1950
Fleur Stevenson (SP4099) - Estar tan lejos y tan cerca de la tierra mía: La Colombia de Monterrey (Mexico) as a Decolonial Cultural Identity and Music Practice
Isabella Paterson (SP4099) - Expressing the Inexpressible: Bachmann’s Response to Wittgenstein’s Tractatus in Das dreißigste Jahr
Harriet White (ML4794)

"It was amazing to see such a great response from our students", said Dr Valderrama-Burgos. "We witnessed two panels and two roundtables where there was consistent insightful and inclusive exploration of a breadth of interests. It was certainly fascinating to learn so much from the showcased projects".
The School of Modern Languages congratulates all undergraduate students who have completed dissertations this academic year and, in particular, those students who shared their work at the Showcase. Thanks also to Dr Valderrama-Burgos for planning and facilitating the event and to Rachel Purpura from the School Office for organising the event arrangements.
