Book presentations in Colombia by Karol Valderrama-Burgos
Karol Valderrama-Burgos, from the Spanish Department, was invited to present her first book in Colombia this past April. Her first monograph, Mujer, diversidad y cine en Colombia: perspectivas de género e imágenes de la mujer en el siglo XXI (Editorial Universidad del Rosario, 2023) is a ground-breaking publication in the dual field of film studies and gender studies applied to Colombian visual culture, as it draws on contemporary representations of women in Colombian films that have not been addressed before or have been scarcely explored, and the extent to which these images defy gendered roles and expectations.
With the support of the School of Modern Languages and the School Impact and Innovation Fund, Karol presented her book to the wider community at the Feria Internacional del Libro de Bogotá – FILBo 2024 [International Bookfest of Bogota] on 22 April. She was honoured to discuss her work with two special guest commentators: Camila Loboguerrero – director, screenwriter and first woman making features in Colombia – and of Gerylee Polanco Uribe –director of Killary CineLab, a research and film lab with gender perspective –. Moreover, celebrating the World Book Day on 23 April, Karol also shared her findings and reflections in dialogue with the general public from Medellín at Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín – MAMM. This was hosted in collaboration with an expert in the field, Dr Paula Barreiro, lecturer from Universidad de Antioquia, and current coordinator of the master’s degree Creación y Estudios Audiovisuales, programme in which Karol recently participated as guest lecturer.
