School of Modern Languages top in new university rankings

The University of St Andrews is Scotland’s top university and one of the top four universities in the UK, according to a new league table published on 7 June 2023.

The Complete University Guide 2024 ranks St Andrews as the top university in Scotland, and fourth in the UK, a few points behind rivals Cambridge and Oxford, which take second and first place respectively, in the annual assessment of universities’ teaching and research strengths.

Seven of the languages taught at the School of Modern Languages were listed in top 5 in the rankings:

• Arabic and Persian - 3rd place (under African and Middle Eastern Studies)
• French - 3rd place
• Italian - 2nd place
• German - 3rd place
• Russian - 4th place
• Spanish - 3rd place (under Iberian Languages)

Chinese language, which has been taught at the School since September 2020, is not yet included in the rankings as it currently has no graduating students.

Overall, The Complete University Guide 2024 placed St Andrews top in the UK for student satisfaction for the fifth year running.
