Gender equality
The Advance HE Athena Swan Charter is a framework which is used across the globe to support and transform gender equality within higher education and research. The School of Modern Languages currently holds an Athena Swan Bronze Award, recognising our commitment to embedding gender equality into all of our policies, practices, and culture.
The School is committed to mainstreaming structural and cultural changes to advance gender equality, as evidenced by having the School’s Director of EDI on its Management Committee. All School relevant meetings are scheduled at family-friendly times. There are gender-neutral toilets in the United College and policies to support return to work after parental leave.
All members of our community complete the University’s online Diversity Training and Unconscious Bias Training modules and there is a module on accessible web design for content editors of the University’s website. The University provides opportunities for female academic staff to gain mentoring and leadership training through the Elizabeth Garrett Mentoring Programme and Advance HE’s Aurora programme, and has a number of relevant staff networks. It also offers places on the Advance HE's Diversifying Leadership programme specifically for BAME members of our community.
To report any incidents of bullying, harassment or abuse (either anonymously or using your contact details), please use the University’s Report and Support tool.
