Study abroad and exchanges

Exchange opportunities are available to students in the Junior Honours year of their degree programme. Exchanges offer students great benefits, including:

  • the chance to experience and appreciate different cultures
  • the development of an international perspective on the theory and practice of management and the enhancement of career prospects.

In collaboration with the Study Abroad Coordinator, the Honours Director, and the partner institution, a programme of study is drawn up for each student who joins an exchange programme. This is based on the following principles:

  • Your workload will be that of a student in the host university.
  • As far as possible, you will study the equivalent of courses that you would have taken at University of St Andrews.
  • Your marks on these courses will be translated into the St Andrews marking scale and used to calculate your final degree class.

When choosing your modules overseas, remember to make sure that modules are:

  • a good match for your St Andrews degree programme
  • adequate preparation for the next level at St Andrews
  • not repeating material already studied.

Turing scheme

The Turing scheme is international in focus and so will allow for universities to support students in placements across the world.

More information is on the Erasmus+ and the Turing scheme web pages.

St Andrews Abroad exchanges

It is possible to include a semester or an academic year as a visiting student at an overseas university as part of your degree program at the University of St Andrews. Universities participating in the programme with the appropriate modules in Management, for example, as at October 2024, are:

  • Università Bocconi (Bocconi University) (Italy)
  • Purdue University (USA)
  • University of Auckland (New Zealand)
  • University of California (USA)
  • University of Melbourne (Australia)
  • Università degli Studi di Padova (University of Padua) (Italy)
  • University of Richmond (USA)
  • Washington College (USA)
  • Western University (Canada)
  • William & Mary (USA).

Students pursuing joint degrees with a foreign language can also opt for an 'Integrated Year Abroad' to further their language skills at various European organisations and institutions. Find out more at the working abroad pages and at the School of Modern Languages year abroad page.

European exchanges [Erasmus+ programme]

The Erasmus+ programme is a European project run by the European Commission. This programme enables you to study or, in some cases, work in Europe for a full semester or full year as part of your degree. Amidst uncertainties around the future of the programme for students in the UK, the University of St Andrews has said:

“For the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 academic years, we will remain within the programme having extended our grant agreement to cover additional years and this will support exchanges across Europe. This is the case despite the UK government removal from the programme and despite the concurrent running of the Turing scheme. From 2022-2023 onwards, however, Erasmus+ grant funding for students will no longer be available for our main programme.”

More information is on the Erasmus+ and the Turing scheme web pages.
