FAQs

What happens after I apply?

Once you have submitted your postgraduate application, the admissions team will begin to process your application. You should receive email confirmation from the registry team that the University has received your application.

All offers will be sent primarily in the form of an email. More information about types of offers, how to respond and the pre-payment of fees can be found at After you apply – postgraduate study.

How do I apply for accommodation?

If you are applying for University accommodation, you will need to complete an online application form. Entrant postgraduates can apply now. However, you cannot apply for accommodation until 48 hours after you have received and accepted an offer of a place to study at the University of St Andrews and made your pre-payment.

If you are an inbound exchange or study abroad student, you can find out more information about how and when to apply for accommodation on the inbound accommodation page.

Find more information at How to apply for accommodation.

What tuition fee rate do I have to pay?

Your fee status will determine the level of tuition fees you will have to pay. You should query your fee status if you are unsure which fee category will apply to you.

If you wish to query your fee status, you must do this prior to receiving a decision on your application. Acceptance of an offer constitutes acceptance of the conditions outlined in the offer, including fee status. You may request a review of your fee status by emailing fees@st-andrews.ac.uk, and the Fees and Funding team will ask you to complete a fee status questionnaire.

Details of fees can be found at Tuition fees for taught postgraduate programmes.

How do I find out about pre-sessional English Language Courses?

The International Education Institute provides two pre-sessional courses for students who use English as an additional language and who have an offer to study at the University.

Find out more about International Education Institute's Pre-sessional courses.

When do I make my pre-payment?

In order to secure your place on the programme, when you accept your offer you are also required to make a pre-payment. Full details are included in your offer letter. Your pre-payment is deducted from the total cost of your tuition fees.

For applicants who require a Tier 4 visa, the total amount paid to date including any pre-payment made, will be displayed on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), where appropriate.

If a pre-payment remains unpaid, this will be taken as an indication that you no longer wish to take up the offer of a place at St Andrews.

A pre-payment is refundable under certain circumstances, for example if you do not meet academic conditions included in your offer.

More information can be found at After you apply – postgraduate study.

What is the cost of living in the UK?

Living in the UK may be a vastly different, and hopefully rewarding, experience to what you're used to in your home country. Before you arrive in the UK, it may be helpful to familiarise yourself with aspects of UK life, such as the cost of living, transport, and healthcare.

Who can I ask for advice about starting University?

Staff at the Advice and Support Centre (ASC) are there for any query, from paying bills, to obtaining an academic transcript, seeking advice on visas, personal issues, or any other student matter.

What is it like to study at St Andrews?

The University of St Andrews is top in the UK for student academic experience according to the National Student Survey 2022. More than 89% of St Andrews final year students gave the University top marks for the quality of the learning and teaching experience.

What do I need to do to prepare for studying on my programme?

Students often ask this question and the answer is pretty simple – there is nothing specific you need to do to prepare. The School of Management doesn't recommend you buy any special textbooks and there are no required readings that you have to do in advance.

Over the summer, in particular if you are an international student, in order to get ready for studying in the UK and specifically in Scotland, the School does recommend that you read the UK newspapers on a regular basis, focussing on the business and financial sections. You could read the Financial Times, the Guardian, The Independent or any other good newspaper that is of interest to you or you could go on to the BBC News website, in order to familiarise yourself with what is happening in the business world around the UK. You might want to make a point of learning more about Scottish news and current affairs.

There is a dedicated team ready to welcome you and support you through the transition to studying on your programme. Everything that you need to do to prepare for your year with the School will take place in Orientation Week and the early weeks of the semester, so you don't have to worry that you will miss out on something prior to commencing your studies.
