Expert commentary on the budget

11 March 2020

On Wednesday 11 March 2020, Professor Ross Brown was asked by The Conversation to provide expert commentary on the UK Government's budget speech made by Chancellor Rishi Sunak, in particular how the budget is likely to affect small businesses.

In his comments, Brown noted that the Chancellor’s speech outlined a series of measures to help the small business sector deal with the coronavirus outbreak, which is causing widespread uncertainty across the UK's small and medium-sized enterprises.  The sector has been found to be deeply affected by uncertainty from unforeseen economic shocks such as the global financial crisis, Brexit and most recently the coronavirus outbreak. Such situations can result in severe consequences for the firms themselves and the wider economy.
