Marketing the Fife linoleum industry

5 February 2024

In February 2024, Masters students in the Department of Management visited the exhibition, 'Flooring the world: exploring the Fife linoleum industry', at the Kirkaldy Gallery and Museum. The field trip was part of their module, 'Marketing and Society', which explores the impact of marketing on people and communities and examines concepts such as planned and perceived obsolescence.

The group had an informative and engaging talk from Lily Barnes, the curator of the exhibition, who is also a graduate of the University of St Andrews (MA Art History, 2016). The linoleum industry in Fife will be used as a case study for the students' upcoming assignment for this module.

“It is great to give our students the opportunity to explore the role local businesses played on the global stage and to consider how marketing has been involved in making and breaking the fortunes of both companies and communities. There is a rich history to be found if you look closely at the linoleum industry, with its local origins, and we were very grateful to Lily for meeting with us and bringing this to life for the students.”
