Surveillance and Society: celebrating 20 years

16 December 2022

The Centre for Research into Information, Surveillance and Privacy (CRISP) is delighted to celebrate the release of the 20th Anniversary issue of Surveillance and Society.

Surveillance and Society was founded 20 years ago by five academics including CRISP director and School of Management Professor Kirstie Ball. Since then, it has witnessed the growth of surveillance studies into a world-wide network of scholars who critically wrangle with one of the most pervasive and consequential issues of our times. The issue presents pieces about the journal's origins, the challenges facing surveillance studies in the future, and the way it has influenced other disciplines. Kirstie has made two contributions, one reflecting on the past and future of surveillance studies, with fellow co-founder Professor Stephen Graham, and one which reviews workplace surveillance research, based on her European Commission report on the same topic published in October 2021.

Surveillance and Society has pursued scholarly activities, while also shining as a beacon of academic innovation. With a commitment to open access academic publishing since its inception, Surveillance and Society remains one of the first truly independent open access academic journals. It is self-funding through its biannual conference and the fundraising activities of its parent organisation, Surveillance Studies Network. Its content can be accessed free of charge from anywhere in the world and its production continues to be a labour of love.

Long may it continue and many congratulations to the editorial board.
