Social theory tools and financial valuation
In April 2022, the School of Management hosted a brown bag seminar by Dr Philip Roscoe, titled 'What the sociology of finance can tell us about the USS pension dispute'.
The idea for the talk began as a classroom discussion with Philip's students on the honours module 'Sociology of Finance' and matured, via conversations with colleagues, into a full length seminar.
Philip's discussion used a scholarly, non-partisan approach and showed how the tools of social theory that he deploys in his research and teaching can help to untangle the complexities of the dispute, and even suggest ways forward; a financial valuation is always much more than 'just' a number.
Philip recorded a version of the talk for those who could not attend. It is available via his blog, Tools for thinking: a sociological take on the USS pension dispute.
