Text source

Johan Jacob, or John James, Pfeif was apparently the son of George Fife, who fled Scotland due to religious persecution in the 1500s. George emigrated to Pomerania, and Johan Jacob was either born there or accompanied his father there as a child. Johan Jacob himself then migrated to Sweden, and established himself in Stockholm in 1639 and served as a pastor in the German church there. In 1654 a J. Jacob Pfeif was enrolled at Uppsala university, and this is probably the same man. He became bishop in Reval, Estonia in 1665, and died in 1676. He had at least two sons, Daniel [SSNE 4801] and Frederik [SSNE 4802] although it is possible that David [SSNE 2471] was also his son (or nephew). There is some doubt as to the origin of the name Pfeif, as it may possibly just have been a legitimate German name.
