If the Balfour Paul lineage is correct, this James King was the uncle of General James King [SSNE 2814], later Lord Eythin, and was the son of James King "sometimes of Barra". However, according to the Swedish historian F.  Rudelius, this James King was called both "den yngste" and "yngre" meaning the youngest and the younger, respectively. This perhaps implies that he was the younger relative of of the General. In any case, he was married to Mary Gordon of Clubsgovil. King's Swedish military career began as an ensign in David Drummond's [SSNE 2396] Kalmar regiment in 1627 (James King's company) before transferring to Patrick Ruthven's [SSNE 3413] Kalmar regiment in 1628. He became a lieutenant with the Yellow regiment in 1628 and transferred back as a lieutenant with Ruthven's Kalmar regiment in 1629. In 1630 he served again in David Drummond's Kalmar regiment until 1633. In a letter dated 28 June 1639 from Hamburg, this officer, then a colonel, signed a testimonial that arms bought by Sir Thomas Roe [SSNE 4421] were serviceable and fit for service by Charles I. One of the other signatories was General James King. Colonel James King died on 7 March 1651.
