James Montgomerie entered Swedish service in 1630 as captain and chief of a company of Scots which that year were recruited by Johan Baner. He was with Baner in Uppland and was ordered shortly thereafter to Pomerania where his company was joined to colonel George Cunningham's [SSNE 2118] (formerly James Seaton's [SSNE 3474] regiment?), though a memo in the Karl Viggo Key archive suggests he was briefly captain of a company in George Crawford's regiment in May 1630. In this source he signed a receipt on 16 May 1630 for monthly wages totalling 248 rdl.and 4 ore.  Montgomerie served as the regimental quartermaster in 1631. He obtained a pass for 6 months' leave [to return to Scotland] but rejoined service before his leave was completed. Robert Monro [SSNE 94] reckoned him among the 'Cavaliers of the Scots nation'. In spring 1631, Mongomerie was with Patrick Ruthven the elder [SSNE 3413] on campaign in Schwaben. He and Hugo Hamilton [SSNE 2582]received 6 month travel passes from Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna in February 1632. He was still a captain in August 1632, but soon became lieutenant colonel and chief for a 'free squadron of foot'. He was killed in a duel on horseback by a Walloon in Swedish service before 1634. He was married to Catherine Baldewin [SSNE 2831], whose Forfarshire parents had moved to Pomerania. His son Jacob David [SSNE 3132] was also in Swedish service.

Caution should be taken with the Viggo Key source as he believes the Earl of Crawford is Alexander Crawford. It is not, it was actually George Lindsay, Earl of Crawford.
