Jacob David Montgomery was the son of lieutenant colonel James Montgomery [SSNE 1632] and Catherine Baldwin [SSNE 2831]. His father served in the Swedish army. Jacob David joined Swedish service in 1630. He was a captain of horse with Johan Mauritz Wrangel's recruited cavalry regiment by 1638 and rode with Johan Lilliehook's recruited cavalry regiment in 1640-1. During this time he was responsible for holding the road to Stettin. In 1646 he entered Charles I's army in Scotland, where he held the rank of lieutenant-colonel. Before May 1649 he received a pass to journey to Sweden and reenter service there. Once in Sweden he obtained 600 riksdaler from the king to serve as a lieutenant colonel. He wrote to Duke Karl circa 1650 (certainly post Westphalian treaty) regarding his 18 years of service to the Swedish crown, the difficulty he had fallen into through some nobleman and the subsequent pardon he had received. The letter also state that he had served under lieutenant general Douglas before returning to his "fatherland" to serve the King of Britain. Now that he was once again in Swedish service he was seeking the payment of his overdue wages. Montgomery died in 1653. He was married to Anna Eleonora von Schell and his son, David Christoffer, also became an officer and died c.1704
