Research areas

My main research interests include Scottish and British relations with Scandinavia and Northern Europe 1560-1750. I am also deeply interested in Scottish history in a British context and currently direct the Scotland, Britain and the Wider World Project. I recently co-authored a monograph with Alexia Grosjean, Alexander Leslie and the Scottish Generals of the Thirty Years' War, 1618-1648 (2014). My present research is working towards a monograph dealing with 'Breaching Neutrality: British prize-taking and Swedish Neutrality, 1652-1713'. For this project I was awarded the Olof Palme Visiting Professorship in Peace Studies at Stockholm University, 2013-2014.
