Restore Creator access to a Panopto folder

Known issue

Staff sometimes find they can no longer locate, record, copy, move or publish videos into the Panopto folder for a Moodle course. This includes editing the videos in the Panopto folder.

To carry out these actions, you must be in the Creator group for the Panopto folder. Creator group membership grants you Creator permissions to the Panopto folder.

Root cause

The loss of Creator permissions is usually caused by clicking on Panopto tools in the Moodle course when in student view. This removes you from the Creator group for the Panopto folder.

Switching to student view gives a sense of what a Moodle course looks like to students. Use of this function is limited to Moodle and does not extend to separate, connected systems, including Panopto.

How to fix

Follow these steps to restore your Creator permissions:

1. Access the Moodle course connected to the Panopto folder you have lost Creator access to.
2. Check that you are in your normal role – not in student view. 
3. If it says Student next to your profile, you need to return to your normal role.
4. Click on the Panopto tool, typically called Lecture recordings.

Other checks

If the steps above do not resolve the issue, you may not have a role in the Moodle course that gives you access to the Creator group in the Panopto folder.

Check what roles you have by selecting Participants in the Moodle course.

• If you do not have one of the following course roles, contact the person responsible for administering the course:
  • Module Coordinator
  • Lecturer
  • Tutor
  • School Administrator
  • Editor
  • Panopto Staff User
  • Caption Editor
  • Senior Team
  • Course Coordinator
  • Course Facilitator
• If the course is for a taught module, the School admin team should be able to assist by updating your role in the MMS staff list for the module. 
• In some instances, you may be added individually to the Panopto folder as a Creator.
