Laboratory facilities - teaching
Teaching laboratory
Our teaching laboratory accommodates 34 students and is designed to support practical work in sediment, soil, and water analysis, providing students with hands-on experience in sample preparation, analysis and interpretation. The space is equipped for a range of physical geography applications, including particle size analysis, sediment and soil characterisation, and water quality investigations.
Microscopes
Our teaching laboratory is equipped with 25 Leica DM500 and Leica DM750 compound microscopes, which include integrated cameras and polarizing units for advanced imaging and mineralogical analysis. In addition, we have 14 Leica EZ4 stereoscopes, providing high-quality stereo viewing for larger specimens. These resources allow students to develop practical microscopy skills across a range of applications, including pollen, foraminifera, diatom, and sediment analysis, as well as tephra studies.
Flume
The teaching laboratory is equipped with a custom-built flume capable of simulating water-solid interaction in a continuous flow regime. The flume offers a selection of slit openings to mimic different hydrological conditions. With a completely clear casing, sediment changes could be easily presented and recorded in a teaching environment.
