Graduate video essay publications

The latest issue of [in]Transition: Journal of Videographic Film & Moving Image Studies (13.3) features video essay work from two graduates of the Film Studies PhD programme.

Dr Maria Fernanda Miño (graduated in 2022, now lecturer of film at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington) - 'Ismael, Nehemías, Josué, Steven' examines the digital mediation of Caso Malvinas, which involves the illegal detention and disappearance of four Afro-Ecuadorian children in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Reworking surveillance footage through doomscrolling and digital 'handling', it explores Black grief and proposes an embodied "right to opacity" that resists extractive modes of witnessing.

Dr Jacob Browne (graduated in 2025) - '"You Must …": Hearing the Voices of Silent Cinema' Through films of the 'silent' era, and via visual representations of sound (including meta-diegetic text), this video attempts to express the uncanny perceptions and eventual compelling sense of revelation typical of the early phases of psychosis.
