New honorary fellows in the Department of Film Studies

We are delighted to welcome Dr María Aimaretti and Dr Julio Gonzales as Honorary Fellows in the Department of Film Studies. Their appointments further strengthen our commitment to internationally engaged research and the study of Latin American cinema and audiovisual culture.

Dr María Aimaretti is a Lecturer in the Chair of Latin American and Argentine Film History at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA). During the 2025-26 academic year, she was a Global Fellow at the University of St Andrews. Her historiographical approach brings together gender studies, comparative studies, women's history, classical film history, and archival practices.

She is the author of Video boliviano de los 80. Experiencias y memorias de una década pendiente en la ciudad de La Paz (Buenos Aires, 2020) and co-director of the UBACyT research project New Analytical Approaches and Historiographical Perspectives on Music, Set Design and Costume Design in Classical Argentine Cinema (1933-1959), based at the Instituto de Arte Americano e Investigaciones Estéticas "Mario J. Buschiazzo" (FADU-UBA).

Dr Julio Gonzales is currently a postdoctoral researcher on the project Connected Teams: Practicing Transcultural Art Histories under the Conditions of Ecological Crises and Digital Transformations: India, Latin America, and Europe (Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz, Max Planck Institute with 4A_Lab, Berlin; Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta; and the Department of Art History, Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá). During the 2025-26 academic year, he was also a British Academy Visiting Fellow in the Department of Film Studies.

His research interests focus on memory, territory, social movements, political ecology, and collaborative practices, with particular emphasis on audiovisual archives, preservation, and processes of collective memory. He has participated in a range of film preservation projects related to the work of Santiago Álvarez, María Barea, Christine and Kurt Rosenthal, Bertha Saldaña, Federico García, Pilar Roca, and Marianne Eyde, as well as the Centre for Tele-Education of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration with María and Julio and to the contributions they will make to the intellectual life of the Department in the years ahead.
