Film Studies teaching celebrated at annual teaching awards

22 April 2026

The annual University Teaching Excellence Awards were held on 21st April, and featured recognition for Film Studies teaching in two categories.

Dr Patrick Adamson was nominated for 'Outstanding Teacher (Arts & Divinity)', a Student Association award based on student nominations. The student who nominated Dr Adamson commented on his enthusiasm, effort and excellence, and the high level of support he provides to students, going out of his way to help students develop their work. This approach encourages and inspires students: "Dr Adamson's ability to foster creativity and individualism drove me to take on the harder effort of creating research where there was none, instead of just taking the easy way out. That is the philosophy that defines Dr Adamson's effect on his students, the desire to exceed expectations, to create what wasn't there before, and I believe now that if I work hard enough, I may one day meet the example that he sets."

Professor Lucy Donaldson's module FM4309: The Audiovisual Essay: Forms and Practice received an 'inclusive teaching award' (a new category introduced this year). The panel commended the module for its strong example of inclusive practice in action, based on its examples of accessibility and inclusivity through pedagogical activities, assessment and feedback, embedded employability and real-world application.
