British Academy Visiting Fellow, Dr Julio Gonzales

The Department of Film Studies will host Peruvian filmmaker and archivist Julio Cesar Gonzales Oviedo, who has been awarded a British Academy Visiting Fellowship, during the first semester of the next academic year (2025-26).

Dr Gonzales will work with Isabel Seguí on the development of the project "Vinegared Images, Disappearing Histories: Safeguarding the Peruvian Newsreels Archive," a preservation strategy to digitise, restore, and make available the newsreels directed and produced by nonfiction filmmaker Bertha Saldaña between 1973 and 1983, under three different regimes.

Deteriorated copies of these films - the only extant ones - are kept at the Cinematheque of Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, the institution in which Dr Gonzales is based.
