Documenting Socialism Workshop
A workshop on East German Documentary Cinema took place in the University's Wardlaw Museum on 30 May-1 June 2022.
Devoted to the history and legacy of East German (GDR) documentary cinema, the workshop featured talks by scholars from the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada and the United States as well as a special series of screenings.
The funding for the event came through the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Promoting German Studies grant for "German Screen Studies Network: Cultures, Media Histories" led by Dora Osborne (German) and Paul Flaig (Film). The workshop papers will form a forthcoming edited collection to be published by Berghahn. The grant also supported subtitling the documentary A Diary for Anne Frank (Hellwig, 1958), which was undertaken by an undergraduate student in German at St Andrews.
