Editing the 19th century symposium

10 April 2017

A two-day symposium on the theme of 'Editing the 19th Century' will take place in the School of English on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th April. Organised by Dr Clare Gill and Dr Katie Garner, it will examine the world of textual editing, and specifically the practices, pitfalls and responsibilities attached to editing 19th century texts today. While facilitating discussion between more senior and experienced editors from across the globe, a further key aim of the symposium is to offer an insight into the editing process.

The symposium schedule will take a mixed format of lectures, workshops, and roundtable discussions arranged to encourage knowledge exchange and the sharing of best practice when editing 19th century texts. Speakers include:

  • Professor Penny Fielding (University of Edinburgh),
  • Professor Alison Lumsden (University of Aberdeen),
  • Professor Daniel A. Robinson (Widener University),
  • Professor Dorothy Driver (University of Adelaide),
  • Professor Francis O’Gorman (University of Edinburgh),
  • Dr Daniel Cook (University of Dundee),
  • Dr Carolyn Burdett (Birkbeck),
  • Dr Andrew van der Vlies (Queen Mary University of London),
  • Dr Susan Manly (University of St Andrews).
