Abate reports on his trip to Washington DC!
A 4th year PhD student Abate Assen Melaku attended the AGU 2024 conference in Washington, DC, from December 8-13, 2024, where he presented his PhD research on volcanic gas emissions from the Tulu Moye Volcanic Complex in the East African Rift System. His poster session on a Mantle Plume Linked to High Volatile Emissions in the Central Ethiopian Rift was well received, and he engaged in fruitful discussions with fellow researchers and the wider scientific community.
Abate has also used the opportunity to join the Ethiopian Geophysical Union International (ETGUI) group and participated in their annual meeting. He had a networking occasion with fellow Ethiopian and international researchers working in the rift system.
Such conferences provide students with insightful feedback, enhanced their presentation skills, and offer significant networking opportunities. It also greatly contributed to the professional development of the students.
The support from the school of Earth and Environmental Sciences in attending such events plays the key role in students’ academic networking and future journey.
