SEES postdoc Dr Hana Jurikova shares her views on a recent paper in Nature Geoscience.
"The work of Cao and colleagues demonstrates that reverse weathering could come to dominate carbon cycling in the ocean–atmosphere system under the right circumstances after the Precambrian. Further geochemical and sedimentological evidence might continue to show that reverse weathering was not as ineffective as originally thought, and that the process can help untangle elusive features of other intervals of environmental and biotic change during the Phanerozoic. If true, this also means that some of the fundamental assumptions that underpin carbon cycle models are worth revisiting".
