Claudia Lubao, a SEES PhD candidate (2021 – 2025) received a £500 travel bursary from SEES to attend the 16th congress of the Pan African Archaeological Association (PAA) for prehistory and the related studies in Zanzibar, Tanzania.
Claudia Lubao presented her paper titled Documentation of the Intangible Marine Cultural Heritage Assets in Eastern Africa: The Case of Fishing Songs in Kilwa Kisiwani, Tanzania in the session of Marine Cultural Heritage Research and Sustainable Development: Community-Centred Strategies to Confront a Changing Environment organized. The paper focused on the fishing songs sung in Kilwa Kisiwani (Southern Coast of Tanzania), where meaning(s) of the songs, contexts in which these songs are sung and the role(s) these songs play in shaping the society were analyzed. Her PhD (practice-based) being focused on Communicating Socio-Cultural and Scientific issues through Music, Claudia performed three songs that forms part of her PhD : Climate & Heritage, Bahari Yetu and I Love You Africa on the opening event of the conference. She also collected views and opinions from the PAA attendants regarding the use of music in communicating heritage and environmental archaeology.
