Research areas

Dr Sharp's research focuses on early Christian conceptions of God (and divinity more broadly) in the context of ancient Graeco-Roman religion and philosopy. His first monograph Divination and Philosophy in the Letters of Paul (EUP, 2022) examines how the Apostle Paul conceives of communication between gods and humans through the lens of Graeco-Roman divination. His current research project is funded by the Leverhulme Trust and entitled: The Stuff that Gods are Made Of: Divinity and Materiality in the New Testament. It explores the different conceptions of the materiality of the divine world in and outside the New Testament and the various ways in which early Christian authors understood divinity to interact with the material world.
