St Andrews secures £2 million green hydrogen funding
The University of St Andrews has been awarded a £2 million grant by the Wolfson Foundation to enable the development of green hydrogen technologies that will play a key role in decarbonising the energy and chemical industries.
The Green Hydrogen Accelerator will provide dedicated space for world-leading research into the efficient production of hydrogen from water and its use in energy storage and chemicals production.

Iran: Wonders of Nature
A new exhibition that explores one of the world’s oldest cultures has opened at the University of St Andrews Wardlaw Museum. Iran: Wonders of Nature looks at how the environment has moulded the Iranian identity over 5000 years. Objects on display include a statue of a snake-like man with scaled skin, made between 3000 and 2000 BC, which is on loan from the Sarikhani Collection.

Alumni Weekend: Friday 14 to Sunday 16 June 2024
We are delighted to announce that this year’s Alumni Weekend is now open for booking.
This year’s events include a reception at Topping & Company Booksellers, lunch with an update on the new Business School and the return of the popular Alumni Clubhouse in Sandy's Bar at the Students' Association.
Join us on Saturday for the Arnold Palmer Invitational – a friendly golf tournament on The Kittocks Course at the Fairmont Hotel, St Andrews. There’s also a wine tasting event later that day featuring wines from around the world (and cheeses to match) in the Beacon Bar, followed by a barbecue. Round off the weekend on the Sunday with the traditional Chapel Service in St Salvator’s Chapel and a walk.

British Council Alumni Awards
Congratulations to St Andrews alumni Charlotte Engel (BA 2019) and Jacob Ware (MA 2017) who were finalists in the British Council Alumni Awards in the USA. Charlotte was shortlisted for the Culture and Creativity Award and Jacob was a finalist in the Social Action Award.
In the British Council Alumni Awards in Greece, alumna Dr Freideriki Michailidou (PhD 2018) is a finalist in the Science and Sustainability Award. The winner will be announced on 21 February. We wish Dr Michailidou the best of luck!

Anne Power (MA 1979) is a psychotherapist, author and couple counsellor based in London. She is the author of ‘Contented Couples: Magic, Logic or Luck?’ and recently gave a TEDx talk on attachment theory. Kaleidoscope Alumni Network: Nowruz in St Andrews
Join us in St Andrews to celebrate Nowruz - Iranian New Year - on Wednesday 20 March. The festivities will be organised by the University's Persian Society in collaboration with the Wardlaw Museum and Kaleidoscope Alumni Network (KAN), and will include traditional foods and fire-jumping.

Global Fellow Sarah Stein Greenberg will take part in an In conversation event hosted by the University's Entrepreneurship Centre (pictured) on Wednesday 3 April at 5.30pm. This is an online and in-person event.
Sarah Stein Greenberg is the Executive Director of the Stanford d.school and author of Creative Acts for Curious People: How to Think, Create, and Lead in Unconventional Ways. She will be in conversation with Rosemary Scrimgeour, design thinking programme facilitator at the Entrepreneurship Centre and course facilitator at Stanford d.school.
Additional events will be hosted in association with Sarah's visit to St Andrews. Further details, including registration, will follow.

Lunch & Learn: What is Fintech?
The University's Entrepreneurship Centre runs a series of monthly Lunch & Learn webinars which are open to all. This month's session will be held on Wednesday 21 February from 1pm - 2pm online and will be led by Farshad Nowshadi.
Farshad is the parent of a current student and is vice chair and mentor to some of the most successful start-ups in the sector including Wise Bank and Revolut. He is also vice president of eStrategy at Saman Bank.

The Start Up Challenge competition
The Entrepreneurship Centre's Start Up Challenge offers up to £5,000 of equity-free funding to support students and recent St Andrews graduates (up to two years post-graduation) to take their business to the next level.
Entries are open for the 2024 competition, with a deadline of Wednesday 6 March. Finalists will be reviewed by a panel of judges before pitching at an event on Wednesday 20 March.

Online short courses
The University offers online short courses aimed at developing professional skills through self-paced learning. The courses are delivered by world-leading academics and span Art History; Philosophical, Anthropological and Film Studies; Business; and Data Science.
The next sessions start on Monday 8 April 2024 and include FinTech Frontiers: Blockchain, Generative AI and Digital Finance; End-to-End Machine Learning; and Modernist art in Europe and Latin America.

St Andrews Graduates Golf Club: correction
In last month’s issue of St Andrews in the News, we carried a notice on behalf of the St Andrews Graduates Golf Society (StAGGS).
Please note that all alumni with an interest in golf are welcome to join StAGGS. There is no specific requirement to have played in the University golf team. We apologise for any confusion caused.
Membership of StAGGS is free and golfers of all abilities are welcome to join.
Three events are planned for 2024 including a spring meet on Sunday 21 April at West Middlesex Golf Course, a singles event for graduates within the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Saturday 15 June and an autumn gathering (details TBC).

SaintsFunder: Blue Angels Bursary 2024-25
This month's SaintsFunder project is Blue Angels Bursary 2024-25. The initiative was founded in 2021 by the University's competitive dance team to offer financial support to aspiring, talented dancers who found the costs of competition fees, uniforms and travel to be a barrier to participation.
