Dr Mohammed Alshurafa

Biography
Dr Mohammed Alshurafa joined the Management Department at the University of St Andrews Business School as a Lecturer in Accounting in April 2025. Prior to this, he held academic posts at Heriot-Watt University and the Islamic University of Gaza.
Mohammed holds a PhD in Accountancy from Heriot-Watt University, an MSc in Accounting and Finance (with Distinction) from De Montfort University, and a BA in Accounting and Finance (awarded with Excellence and Honour) from the Islamic University of Gaza.
In addition to his academic work, Mohammed is a qualified accountant and a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Before undertaking his PhD, he worked as an auditor at Ernst & Young (2013–2015) and later served as a Regional Finance Specialist at the Education Above All Foundation in Qatar (2015–2019), where he worked on financial strategy for international educational development projects.
He is also a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (FHEA). His teaching interests include financial accounting, corporate reporting, and auditing and assurance.
Research areas
His research is qualitative, critical, and interdisciplinary, with a particular interest in NGO accountability, digitalisation, and human rights in postcolonial settings. His work has appeared in several leading academic journals, including Accounting, Organisations and Society, The British Accounting Review, and Benchmarking: An International Journal.
Mohammed is keen to hear from prospective PhD students whose interests align with his research areas. He also welcomes opportunities to collaborate across disciplines, particularly where this allows for richer perspectives and shared expertise.
