Research Overview
The group's interests are broad, ranging from understanding the behaviour of the magnetic vortex lattice in high Tc superconductors through to understanding the next generation of magnetic storage media.
A particular focus of the group is the interaction of magnetism and superconductivity, particularly in thin film hybrid superconducting devices. We also undertake research into bulk oxide single crystal supeconductors. Other areas of interest include nanoparticles and artificial nanomagnetic arrays and magnetic recording media. A lot of this work is conducted using technques such as the Muon Spin Rotation (µSR) and neutron scattering, carried out a international central facilities suc has the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland, Rutherford Appleton Research Laboratory in the UK and tw Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) in France. This work is also aided by measurements performed at St. Andrews. At St. Andrews, where we have access to a number of measurement techniques including a 5T Squid magnetometer, a 7T 300mK system, ac-susceptibility, a transport rig and torque magnetometry. Sample preparation facilities are also available as well as access to a wide range of other shared facilities within the School of Physics and Astronomy and SUPA.
For studies of thin films, including superconductors and artificial nanomagnetic arrays using a combination of techniques that include Low energy Muons (LEM), SANS and Polarised Neutron Reflectivity (PNR) is particularly effective. By combining neutron scattering techniques with analytical modelling and micromagnetic simulations, we have been able to extract important information about the local magnetic behaviour such systems.
