Module description
This module is flexibly designed to introduce students to a range of critical theories central to the programme of study on the degree, and to introduce students to the complexity and variety of current debates in feminist and gender theory. It also provides historical and interdisciplinary contexts that supplement and support the core literature modules. The module is team taught, exposing students to diverse perspectives and methodologies, and seminars act as points of departure from which students are encouraged to explore those areas of enquiry that most interest them.

- Analyse a range of writings and other relevant materials including critical resources at an advanced level.
- Work with a range of research methods and tools (for example, library and archival catalogues and online databases)
- Present lengthy and complex arguments in writing and use discipline-specific methods of bibliography and citation.
- Apply, explore and develop new knowledge and understanding through seminar debate, supervisory discussion and independent research
- Articulate ideas lucidly and persuasively (including the formal presentation of research before an audience).

Module description
This module is designed to enhance students’ knowledge of a range of critical approaches and theories central to the study of literature. It will introduce students to the debates, concepts, theories, and methodologies that have shaped the study of literature across a long history, and it explores topics and themes in literary criticism that supplement and support other modules available on the degree programme. It also offers students the opportunity to develop research skills essential to postgraduate study in English literature. The module is team taught, exposing students to diverse and wide-ranging perspectives and methodologies applicable to any pathway or topic, and students on the module are encouraged to focus on the areas of enquiry that most interest them.
