Module description

In this module students will read texts and cultural materials originally written in Polish, Russian, Ukrainian and Yiddish in the early 20th century. Modernism will be explored as a transnational, diverse and dynamic phenomenon driven by political, technological and cultural change. In turn, we will analyse the relationship between artistic production and activism, evaluating cultural production as a strategy to effect societal and political change. The module will focus on texts that use new and experimental techniques to convey the experience of modern city life. Coursework will include opportunities for students to experiment with translation and their own creative writing.
