Key module information

SCOTCAT credits

20

The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

SCQF level

SCQF level 10

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Module description

This module is designed to provide a more advanced understanding of research design and statistics. Emphasis will be placed on the acquisition of analytical skills covering typical research situations encountered in the behavioural sciences. There is also an emphasis on integration of concepts across a family of techniques based on correlation and regression. The syllabus will include such topics as multiple regression, mediation and moderation analysis, conditional process models, factor analysis, and practical data analysis. There is a focus on computerized data analysis, interpretation, and presentation.

Intended learning outcomes

  • Use SPSS for computerised data analysis and be able to generalise the interpretation of statistical output from other analysis programs
  • Understand core statistical concepts from normal-theory least-squares models, and in particular from the correlation/multiple regression/factor analysis family of techniques.
  • Know the steps of practical data analysis from first receiving data to analysing and reporting results
  • Critically read and interpret the results sections of psychological literature
