Module description

This module provides an introduction to early modern Italian literature and culture, primarily through the works of Castiglione, Stampa, Ariosto and Tasso. Some of the key aspects that the course will consider include the humanist paradigm and the Questione della lingua, the codification and use of literary models as well as the definition and reinvention of literary genres, the crucial discussion on gender, women’s education and their role in society. More general themes relating to the Italian Cinquecento (such as the relationship of literature with the other arts, the links between the cultural and the socio-political transformations taking place in the Italian peninsula at the time) will also be considered throughout the course for their direct relevance to the texts studied and their contextualising value.
